  • The Secret of Kells

    The Secret of Kells is a 2009 animated movie about the making of the famous Book of Kells. The movie tells the story of Brendan, a young boy living in an abbey under the watchful eye of his uncle the Abbot Cellach. Brendan longs to learn the art of illumination from the monks at the monastery, and when Brother Aiden arrives (along with his cat Pangur Bán) Brendan befriends him and agrees to help with the creation of the book. Along the way, Brendan ventures outside the abbey walls to fetch materials for ink, meets a mysterious woodland fairy named Aisling, fights a deity of destruction and death, and has to contend with a Viking invasion.

  • Nimona (movie)

    Nimona is a 2023 animated movie directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, and available on Netflix. The movie is an adaptation of ND Stevenson's graphic novel of the same name, and is set in a sci-fi/fantasy world of knights and monsters. The movie features the voice acting talents of Chloë Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, and Eugene Lee Yang. We reviewed the graphic novel on episode 67 back in January 2022.

  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

    Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the 2023 animated film that serves as a sequel to Sony Animation Studio's wildly successful 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Once again, we follow the adventures of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, as they leap between dimensions to try and stop the latest super-villian, The Spot. Along the way they meet friends both new and old, explore their growing relationship, and carefully navigate the relationships they each have with their families.

  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

    Sony's animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse debuted to critical acclaim in 2018. The movie follows the life of Miles Morales, a teen-ager of African-American and Puerto Rican descent, who is bitten by a radioactive spider and if thrust into a battle with Kingpin to stop a world-ending trans-dimensional super-collider from being activated. Assisting him in his pursuit are several Spider-people from alternate dimensions, who are trying to help save the world but also return to their respective homes. Filled with heart, humor, and ground-breaking visuals, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse wowed audiences and won the award for Best Animated Feature at the Golden Globes.

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

    This week we discuss the unique universe inhabited Marvel's group of super-hero misfits, the Guardians of the Galaxy. The ensemble cast includes series veterans Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, and the movie was written and directed by James Gunn.

  • Big Hero 6

    Big Hero 6 is a 2014 animated Disney movie loosely based on a Marvel comic of the same name. In the movie, 14 year old Hiro Hamada tries to solve the mystery surrounding the untimely death of his older brother Tadashi. Hiro is joined on his mission by Baymax, a huggable health-care robot build by his brother, along with a group of Tadashi's college friends. As their adventure unfolds, they become super-heroes who save the city from a mysterious villian out to destroy his enemies.

  • Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

    Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a 2022 retelling of the classic tale of a wooden puppet come to life. Set in fascist Italy during World War II, the stop-motion animated movie is at once a story of one child lost and another found, how life and death are both interconnected and inevitable, and the lengths one would go to to save a loved one.

  • Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

    In the new movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Edgin the bard (Chris Pine), plus his barbarian, druid and mage friends, embark on a quest to right past wrongs and save Edgin's daughter from their former colleague Forge Fitzwilliam and the evil Red Sorceress.

The film is both comedy and drama, and is even a bit prophetic in its look at how television creates celebrities and how reality shows appeal to audiences who want a peek into the private lives of others.
